Net Zero

01

What is Net Zero

  • Net Zero refers to a state where the total greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere are balanced by an equivalent amount of emissions removed or neutralised.
  • This applies at every level — countries, industries, organisations, and value chains.
  • When emissions produced are equal to emissions reduced or removed, the net climate impact becomes zero.
02

Why Net Zero Matters

Climate change is driven by the accumulation of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂). Achieving Net Zero is essential to limit global warming, protect ecosystems, and ensure long-term economic stability.

For both countries and corporates, Net Zero is now a strategic priority driven by:

  • Climate commitments and regulatory frameworks
  • Economic resilience and energy security
  • Investor, customer, and citizen expectations
  • Long-term competitiveness and growth

Net Zero is no longer a distant ambition — it is a defining pathway for sustainable development.

03

How Net Zero is Achieved

Net Zero is not achieved through a single action. It is a structured, measurable journey built on three core principles that apply across national and organizational contexts.

1: Measure Emissions
The first step is understanding emissions across all relevant sources.
This includes:

  • Direct emissions from operations and infrastructure
  • Indirect emissions from energy consumption
  • Indirect value-chain emissions such as suppliers, transport, land use, and consumption

Accurate measurement enables transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making.

2: Reduce Emissions at Source
The priority in any Net Zero strategy is real and sustained emission reduction.
This is achieved through:

  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption
  • Low-carbon technologies and process optimisation
  • Sustainable transport, supply chains, and land use
  • Policy, operational, and behavioural changes

Reduction creates lasting impact and drives economic and environmental benefits.

3. Neutralise Residual Emissions
Some emissions cannot be eliminated immediately.
These residual emissions are balanced through:

  • Carbon removal and nature-based solutions
  • High-quality, verified carbon credits
  • Long-term carbon sequestration initiatives

Neutralisation complements reduction and ensures overall balance.

04

Enabling the Net Zero Journey

Achieving Net Zero requires accurate data, clear pathways, and trusted execution.
CarbonHub supports this journey by enabling:

  • Emission measurement and tracking
  • Reduction planning and prioritisation
  • Credible neutralisation and reporting

Turning ambition into action — at every level.

Carbon Credit

What Is a Carbon Credit?

  • A carbon credit represents the reduction, avoidance, or removal of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide (CO₂) or equivalent greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
  • In simple terms: One carbon credit one tonne of emissions balanced.
  • Carbon credits help organizations and countries address residual emissions that cannot be eliminated immediately, while they continue to reduce emissions at source.

How Carbon Credits Fit Into Net Zero?

  • In a credible Net Zero strategy:
  • Emissions are measured accurately
  • Reduction is prioritized
  • Carbon credits are used only for residual emissions
  • High-quality carbon credits help close the gap to Net Zero while maintaining integrity and transparency.

Global Carbon Credit Market

The global carbon credit market enables the trading of verified emission reductions across borders, allowing climate action to happen where it is most effective.

It operates through two main markets:

  • Compliance markets, driven by government-mandated emission limits
  • Voluntary markets, where organisations purchase credits to support Net Zero and sustainability commitments

Together, these markets mobilise billions of dollars annually into renewable energy, nature-based solutions, and emerging climate technologies worldwide.

India’s Carbon Credit Market — a quick, grounded overview

India is building a national carbon market that links legal mandate, market mechanisms and voluntary action to mobilise finance for emissions reductions and removals.

At the centre of this effort is the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) — a government-designed framework that creates an Indian Carbon Market (ICM) with both a compliance mechanism for large emitters and an offset/voluntary window for other actors. India Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS).

The Indian market aims to:

  • Price and reward emission-efficiency improvements across industry sectors
  • Channel finance into renewable energy, methane abatement, forestry, and carbon removal projects in India
  • Help India meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and long-term Net Zero goals while enabling businesses to manage compliance and transition risk.
